Peer Support In Action | July

Our Peer Support team have been busy this month. Here's the latest from Estara’s Peer Support Mentors.

Women's Group

We had Women's Support Group this month and it was a fantastic turnout. The sound of laughter and happiness echoed in the lovely SPF Hall at the Repat Health Precinct.

The Women’s Group enables women who have had a spinal cord injury (SCI) or a neurological condition to catch up with peers, share information, ask questions and build friendships. Vicky and Molly (Peer Support Mentors) said that they look forward to it each month as they love seeing the connections being made within the group.

If you are interested and would like to get involved with the Women’s Group, please get in contact with Molly here.

Patient Education Session

On Tuesday 30 June, our Peer Support Team ran a Patient Education session for current inpatients on the Spinal Cord Injury Unit at The Repat. We were really grateful for the opportunity to run the session alongside many other great topics. Our session touches on getting out in the community, travel and recreation, as well as taking care of your mind and body after a spinal cord injury. This is an opportunity for Peer Support Mentors to share our lived experience in a group setting and foster a safe environment for patients to ask questions.

Art and Wellbeing

We were delighted to invite a previous SCI patient and the very talented, Angelo Carbone, to the unit during our weekly Art and Wellbeing Session which Peer Support assist with alongside the CALHN SA Health Volunteer Program. Angelo sung a variety of songs and it was lovely to have the music drifting through the corridors. Thanks Angelo for entertaining us.

Balloon Volleyball

It was all action at balloon volleyball.

This month we had Physio students who are currently doing placement at The Repat join in. It was a wonderful experience for them to learn how to manoeuvre a wheelchair and, at the same time, try and hit an unpredictable balloon over the net.

An update from QWERTY

The QWERTY Computer Hub at the Repat Health Precinct continues to be a welcoming and vibrant space, regularly attracting inpatients, outpatients, and visitors from across the Repat campus.

Whether people are looking to explore assistive technology, learn new skills, socialise, or simply take a break from the ward, the Hub offers something for everyone. It continues to be a valued part of the rehabilitation journey by encouraging independence, building confidence, and creating opportunities for meaningful social interaction.

Our entertainment area remains incredibly popular, with the arcade gaming machine, air hockey table, and PlayStation 5 proving to be favourites with both adults and children. These activities provide plenty of fun, friendly competition, and help create a positive and enjoyable rehabilitation experience.

Think you've got what it takes to top the leaderboard? We're looking for challengers to compete for the highest score on one of our arcade and Play Station 5 games. If you're up for the challenge, we would love to hear from you. Please get in touch with Craig here or drop into the QWERTY Hub.

QWERTY Opening Hours: Monday – Thursday, 12.00pm - 5.00pm
