A day in the life of a HR Consultant
This month, we shine a spotlight on estara staff member Caitlin James, HR Consultant.
We asked Caitlin a few questions to get to know her a bit better.
How long have you worked with estara?
4 and a half years.
Describe your job in 25 words.
I support the HR Business Partner across all things HR, juggling investigations, recruitment, and industrial updates, while keeping Learning and Development running and serving as the go‑to for Employment Hero.
If your role had a slogan, what would it be?
“Proving HR isn’t as scary as the stereotype by combining robust processes with a human approach.”
What are the top 3 things you must get done each day?
No two days are ever quite the same, but a typical day might include:
Checking in with workers who may have been injured at work and supporting their return to work
Keeping Learning and Development moving, including answering queries and managing e-learning
Providing advice to managers and conducting investigations as needed
What’s something your team does really well together?
Celebrating every occasion with snacks.
Had a birthday? Cheese board.
Work anniversary? Cheese board.
Your friend’s neighbour’s cousin had a baby? Cheese board.
All cheese boards aside, we work incredibly well together to support one another. We’re always bouncing ideas around and happy to lend a hand when needed. I’m grateful to be part of such a supportive team.
What’s one thing on your desk you couldn’t live without?
My headphones! I am always listening to something; usually a podcast.
What’s your favourite workday snack or coffee order?
I'm a sucker for salt and vinegar chips!
What song best describes your workday rhythm?
“Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen
What are you reading/listening/watching/playing at the moment?
At the moment, most of my spare time is going into playing Pokopia on my Switch. It’s basically Animal Crossing meets Pokémon, and it’s very addictive.
What’s the best part of working at estara?
Knowing the work we do has a real impact, and being part of a team that is genuinely supportive, collaborative, and willing to step in for each other when it counts.
What do you like to do when you are not working?
When I’m not working, I’m usually gardening, crafting, cooking, gaming, or spending time with friends and family, often over good food and a drink. I like to keep busy!
What is your favourite holiday destination?
Scotland and New Zealand are my favourites so far. I love anywhere with great scenery, plus bonus points for historic architecture. That said, I’ve got a trip to Mexico and South America coming up, so that might change soon (I’m looking at you, Machu Picchu).
Is there anything else you feel like sharing with us? Do you have any special talents?
I’m surprisingly competitive when it comes to games; board games, video games, anything really. It’s all fun and games… until I start keeping score.
Thanks Caitlin! Look out next month for our next staff feature.
