The power of peer support after spinal cord injury

Adjusting to life after a spinal cord injury (SCI) can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to navigate it alone.

At estara, we believe connecting with people who have shared lived experience can make a powerful difference to recovery, confidence, independence, and community connection. That’s why peer support has long been an important part of how we support the spinal cord injury community across South Australia.

If you have been to the Repat Health Precinct, you may have met with estara’s Peer Support Mentors and may have connected with them to help support, guide, and motivate you during your rehabilitation.

How Peer Support Mentors can help

Our mentors can support you and your family by:

  • Sharing practical advice and lived experience

  • Helping connect you with services, resources, and supports

  • Assisting with day-to-day problem-solving and routines

  • Supporting community connection and independence

  • Providing encouragement and emotional support

Support is flexible and guided by you. Some people prefer regular contact, while others may only want occasional support or advice.

Support in the community

Peer Support Mentors can continue supporting you after rehabilitation, including:

  • Visiting you at home

  • Meeting in the community

  • One-on-one catch-ups

  • Group gatherings and peer connection opportunities

Connecting with others who understand your experience can help reduce isolation, build confidence, and provide practical insight into everyday life after spinal cord injury.
